About This License Classification
The C-42 Sanitation System Contractor license authorizes installation of septic systems, cesspools, and other on-site wastewater treatment systems.
This license authorizes work in the following areas:
- Septic tank installation
- Leach field construction
- Alternative wastewater systems
- System repair and pumping
- Grease interceptors
- Sewage ejector systems
Required Work Experience
To qualify for this license examination, you must document at least four years of journey-level experience in this trade within the past 10 years.
Journey-level experience includes:
- Working as a foreman, supervisor, or lead worker in this trade
- Operating your own contracting business in this specialty
- Managing projects in this classification
- Hands-on technical experience demonstrating trade knowledge
Two Required Examinations
You must pass two separate examinations:
Law & Business Exam
Format: Multiple choice
Passing Score: 72%
Content: California contractor laws, business management, safety regulations, contracts, and financial management
Trade-Specific Exam
Format: Multiple choice
Passing Score: 72%
Content: Technical knowledge, materials, methods, codes, and standards specific to this trade classification
Open-Book Testing
Both exams are open-book. You may bring reference materials including code books, technical manuals, and your own study notes. Organization is key – tab your books and know where to find information quickly.

2. Submit Your License Application
- Gather experience verification documents
- Form your business entity (if needed)
- Complete CSLB application online at cslb.ca.gov
- Schedule and complete LiveScan fingerprinting
- Pay application and initial license fees
3. Pass Your Examinations
- Wait for CSLB application approval (typically 4-8 weeks)
- Schedule both Law & Business and Trade exams
- Pass both exams with 72% or higher
4. Secure Required Bonding and Insurance
- Obtain $25,000 contractor license bond
- Purchase general liability insurance
- Get workers' compensation insurance (if applicable)
- Submit proof of bond and insurance to CSLB
5. Receive Your Active License
- CSLB issues your license number
- Obtain local business permits
- Update all business materials with license number
- Begin licensed operations!
